Preliminary Task

We had a limited amount of time to actually film this piece, so it was made in a rush. We took a long time thinking of an idea to use in the task, even though it was to show how well we use the camera. Anyway, we filmed all of the task within the 6th form block. We took the idea of a sort of psychic medium which had a visit from someone carrying a piece of paper with a mysterious symbol drawn on it. We did quite a few over-the-shoulder shots aswell as a close-up of the handle on the door. We used Bex's hands, who played the 'psychic', instead of showing her face to help add some mystery to her character. As it was only Bex who had previously been able to use the editing software, Me, Adam and Natalie learnt a lot by experimenting in the editing suite, aswell as observing Bex use it. We have learnt from our mistakes, to manage the timing well and to be experimental with the use of camera shots and editing to create a better piece of film.

Final Destination.

For a presenation, we had to watch the beginning to a thriller movie, then write up and talk about it afterwards. The use of the camera in the first three minutes of this clip from final destination suggest a lot about the overall theme of the film. There are a lot of close-up shots of stuff like the window, and the sort of 'voodoo' doll, which, relating to the main theme of death being out of control and decided by fate, does actually represent the idea of being controlled, as does the high angle shot of the fan which slowly moves downward, as if losing control and plunging into danger. Also, the extreme close-ups of the fan represent the idea of getting closer and closer to death, and by it going in and out of focus suggests the uncertainty and how in the film, the charachters are sometimes certain they have figured out the path of death, when they havent fully realised it at all. There are lots of sharp sounds, with screams, wind, paper turning and mysterious, almost tragic music. The sound of the fan is pretty loud too. I guess it all adds to the suspense and the clue that this film is going to be a thriller/horror. There's a blue sort of tinge to the clip, making the viewer feel cold and unwelcome. Toys have been placed around the room; perhaps taking the idea of how death plays with the lives of the characters in this film? The grim words "this is the end" suggest the doom of the characters, and is ironic, seeing as this is the start of the movie...
